Margarita Buttenmueller is a contemporary artist based in Singapore, known for her vibrant oil and acrylic paintings inspired by nature and urban life. Originally from Russia, she has also lived in Germany, the UK, the USA, and Singapore - each location shaping her creative vision.
Margarita began painting in 2012, initially for fun, while living in Singapore. Later, she deepened her artistic skills through studies at Central Saint Martins, The Art Academy, and Morley College in London, all while working full-time in a tech startup.
Later in New York, Margarita made the bold decision to leave her career in marketing and business development to pursue art full-time, and went to study art at the Art Students League and Bridgeview School of Fine Arts. It was also then that she began exhibiting more widely and selling her work to private collectors internationally. Since returning to Singapore in 2018, Margarita has participated in over 20 exhibitions, and her paintings are now part of private collections worldwide - including the USA, Europe, Australia, Russia, and Singapore.
Artist Statement.
"In my work, I am particularly drawn to the interplay of colour. I like reimagining what I see and often replace real-life colours with imagined ones to express feeling, energy and atmosphere rather than literal representation. My inspiration comes from the world around me - from tropical nature to the architecture and everyday urban life of Singapore. Emotion and intuition guide my palette, allowing familiar places to take on a new character through colour.
In recent years, I have become particularly drawn to Singapore’s HDB architecture and the understated beauty of ordinary residential spaces. I am fascinated by their geometry, repetition and bold architectural forms, but also by the small details that make each building feel individual - plants, laundry, open windows, decorations and traces of everyday life. These elements bring warmth and personality to structures that can appear uniform from a distance.
Whether I am painting a tropical landscape or an HDB façade, I am interested in finding beauty in the familiar and transforming everyday scenes through colour. Through vibrant, layered compositions, I hope to encourage viewers to pause, look more closely, and see their surroundings in a new and unexpected way."
